16mm Film Workshop Initiative
The Coastal Communities Film Society (CCFS) proudly presents the 16mm Film Workshop Initiative — a hands-on learning experience that celebrates the art and history of analog filmmaking. This two-day program brings communities together to explore the beauty of shooting on real 16mm celluloid film while learning the fundamentals of cinematography, exposure, and storytelling.
About the Workshop
Participants learn the full celluloid filmmaking process — from operating vintage film cameras and understanding light to planning and shooting a collaborative short community film. The exposed film is then developed and scanned by a Canadian processing lab, with editing support provided by CCFS or a local volunteer editor.
Once completed, the finished short film is shared with participants and screened locally, celebrating the creativity of rural coastal voices.
Past Workshop: Bamfield 2024
Our pilot 16mm workshop was hosted in Bamfield, BC, where participants learned to operate classic film cameras, create visual stories together, and experience the joy of working with celluloid. The workshop concluded with a local screening of the film — a celebration of collaboration, community, and creativity on the coast.
Host a Workshop in Your Community
We’re expanding the 16mm Workshop Initiative to rural coastal communities across British Columbia. CCFS will partner with local artists or community leaders to help bring the workshop to your area.
- Vancouver Island & Gulf Islands: CCFS can provide an instructor and film equipment.
- Other Coastal Regions: We’ll help you secure funding and provide the tools, camera, and curriculum needed to host your own local workshop.
If you’re interested in hosting, we’ll work with you to plan logistics, supply a 16mm camera, and support your community through the creative process.
Next Workshop
We’re currently planning our next 16mm Workshop for early 2026. The location will be announced soon. Stay tuned for updates on where we’ll be bringing the next hands-on celluloid filmmaking experience along the BC coast.
